Honoring the memory of WW2 Chaplains
and their example to Hold The Line
Hello, my name is Aaron. As a teenager, I lived with my grandfather for 3 years. He was a World War II veteran, and he would share different stories about his experiences in Europe. He put a love of military history into my heart.

A number of years later, I was a pastor of a church in Paris from 2016 - 2021. It was a personal obligation to visit Normandy and pay my respects to the veterans who fought for our freedom. During a trip to Sainte Mère Eglise in 2019 on the 75th anniversary of D-Day, I was surprised by the number of Commemorators and the reenactment camps. As I looked around the one question that came to my mind was, “where are the chaplains?” There were chaplains in 1944 and sensed there should be chaplains today. That moment started a journey to meet some incredible people!
In the chaos all around, chaplains bring a touch of home by offering servicemen a reminder and an uninterrupted connection of their former lives before the war, and talk about peace in the coming afterlife. In the chaos all around, chaplains bring a touch of home by offering servicemen a reminder and an uninterrupted connection of their former lives before the war, and talk about peace in the coming afterlife. In a word, the purpose of chaplains is to provide continuity and to be a support and an example to others.
We do this by participating in the lives of the Commemorators. The duty of a chaplain is to be with people…it is a ministry of presence and walking with others wherever they are. So we go reenactment camps and set up a chaplain’s tents and have services, and participate in events, and shake hands and share the love of Jesus.
The purpose is to encourage people to remember God. During World War II, chaplains were an integral part of the lives of the servicemen. For some reason, in today’s modern society, we have forgotten who God is, and what he can be in our lives. Static Line remembers the examples of the chaplains and their example to us to Hold the Line of our belief in Jesus Christ.
